Environmental Stewardship Program

The KCMA administered program is designed to encourage and recognize manufacturers that employ the use of environmentally responsible materials in the production of their products. The program also identifies those companies that seek to minimize the environmental impact on their local communities by recycling wastes and using low emissions coatings. Those businesses achieving this certification are going beyond the minimum requirements and are demonstrating leadership in growing a sustainable company.

  • 75% or greater of Particleboard purchased meets the formaldehyde emissions levels of the CPA EPP designation: (balance must meet ANSI A208.1). The Environmentally Preferable Product (EPP) program requires that the formaldehyde levels not exceed 0.2 ppm. The ANSI A208.1 requires a maximum emissions level of 0.3 ppm.
  • 75% or greater of MDF purchased meets the formaldehyde emissions levels of the CPA EPP designation: (balance must meet ANSI A208.2) The Environmentally Preferable Product (EPP) requires that the formaldehyde levels not exceed 0.2 ppm. The ANSI A208.2 also requires a maximum emissions level of 0.3 ppm.
  • 75% or greater of Plywood purchased meets PS-1 for Construction and Industrial panels or ANSI/HPVA HP-1 for formaldehyde emissions: The standards referenced here specify a maximum formaldehyde emissions level of 0.2 ppm.
  • Seventy five percent of finished products are finished domestically and finishes used emit no greater Hazardous Air Pollutants than allowed by local plant operating permits.
  • 75% or greater of Particleboard purchased meets the CPA 1-02 Grademark Certification for recycled/recovered fiber content: The Composite Panel Association (CPA) 1-02 Grademark Certification requires the manufacturer of the board to certify that the product is made from 100% recycled/recovered fiber as defined in the standard.
  • 75% or greater of MDF purchased meets the CPA 1-02 Grademark Certification for recycled/recovered fiber content: The Composite Panel Association (CPA) 1-02 Grademark Certification requires the manufacturer of the board to certify that the product is made from 100% recycled/recovered fiber as defined in the standard.
  • Manufacturer utilizes a written training plan on an annual basis to educate their hardwood suppliers of their purchasing preference for certified hardwood lumber.
  • Hardwood purchased are certified through a recognized sustainable forestry program.

    • The Forest Stewardship Council
    • The Pan European Forest Certification Council
    • The International Tropical Timber Organization

  • Manufacturer has an active recycling program for process wastes in at least two of the following product categories:
    • Cardboard
    • Paper
    • Plastic
    • Wood
    • Solvents
  • Manufacturer has a program for tracking and reducing process wastes with documented goals and reports (EPA Performance Track and/or other state/province specific programs)
  • Manufacturer uses internal or external process by-products to generate alternate energy services, e.g. electricity, steam or other.
  • Manufacturer has a documented energy conservation program.
  • Manufacturer has a firm commitment to environmental quality as evidenced by a written policy statement.
  • Manufacturer has an Environmental Management System (EMS) in place either:
  • Not certified by a third party
  • Certified by a third party
  • Manufacturer reviews environmental practices and policies of its key vendors and contractors.
  • Manufacturer has a documented program which promotes the use of renewable/recycled materials or products.
  • Manufacturer demonstrates community involvement and leadership through service or charitable organizations (Habitat for Humanity, Food Banks, Emergency Response Agencies, hospitals and similar organizations).
  • Manufacturer has had no major non-compliance citations from any Federal, State or local environmental regulatory agency in the previous 12 months.
